From the 2025 exams onward, every Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) candidate sits a dedicated non-calculator paper. For a generation raised on the device, it is the biggest shift in years — and the reason mental maths went from “nice to have” to non-negotiable.

One full paper, no device

Every 0580 candidate — Core or Extended — sits one complete paper where the calculator stays in the bag. Roughly half of the final result rides on it.

Students who reach for the device the moment a number appears freeze without it. They lose marks on questions they understand in principle — through slow arithmetic, careless slips, and pure panic.

The honest diagnosis

Calculator dependence is a habit, not a maths ability

Nobody is born calculator-dependent. It grows quietly, one convenient button-press at a time, until the mental muscles have never been asked to lift anything. The good news hiding in that sentence: habits can be retrained. At any grade.

  • Speed collapses. Arithmetic that should take seconds takes minutes — and the paper is timed.
  • Error-checking disappears. A student who can't estimate can't notice that 4.7 × 8 “=” 376 is absurd.
  • Confidence drains. Every hesitation whispers “you can't do this,” and anxiety finishes the job.
  • Reasoning never develops. The device does the thinking's groundwork — so the thinking stays soft. This is the deepest cost, and it follows students far beyond the exam.

The strategies below are the kind of thing Mathagon students absorb week after week — simple, honest arithmetic moves that make the non-calculator paper feel unfair in your favour.

48 × 25

25 is 100 ÷ 4. So multiply by 100, then divide by 4: 4800 ÷ 4.

= 1200, in your head
102 − 67

Don't borrow — count up. 67 → 70 is 3. 70 → 102 is 32. Add the jumps.

= 35, no borrowing
35²

Ends in 5? Multiply 3 by its next number (3 × 4 = 12), then write 25 after it.

= 1225, three seconds
19 × 21

That's (20 − 1)(20 + 1) — a difference of squares: 400 − 1.

= 399, one subtraction
15% of 80

10% is 8. Half of that is 4. Add them: 8 + 4.

= 12, no formula sheet
998 + 597

Round both up: 1000 + 600 = 1600. You borrowed 2 and 3 — give back 5.

= 1595, faster than typing it
